In this course, you will learn about 21st century competition, the forces driving it, and the challenges it poses for companies. Using that as the backdrop, you will learn how to analyze a company's external and internal environments and develop powerful strategies that allow companies to gain a sustainable competitive advantage even in fast-cycle markets. In today’s fast-changing global economy, competitive advantage can vanish overnight. New technologies, shifting customer expectations, global disruptions, and emerging competitors are constantly reshaping industries. To compete effectively, strategic managers must first understand the external forces that drive change and determine where opportunities and threats arise. In this module, you will explore how companies analyze their macro-environment, industries, and competitors to make informed strategic choices. You’ll learn to apply tools such as PESTEL analysis, Porter’s Five Forces, and competitor mapping to assess industry attractiveness and identify sources of competitive pressure. After completing the module, you will be able to analyze how technological change, globalization, and competitive forces shape industry structure and customer behavior, and evaluate how these external factors influence a firm’s competitive strategy.

Understanding the external environment is only half of the strategic challenge. True competitive advantage comes from within—from what a firm uniquely does better than its rivals. In this module, you’ll look inside the firm to uncover the sources of superior performance. You will learn how to measure Economic Value Created (EVC), analyze a company’s Value Chain to pinpoint cost and differentiation drivers, and assess resources and capabilities using the VRIO framework. These tools will help you understand why some firms sustain superior performance even when facing the same changing external conditions as others. After completing the module, you will be able to assess a firm’s internal activities, resources, and capabilities using frameworks such as EVC, the Value Chain, and VRIO to determine the foundations and sustainability of its competitive advantage.

Once you understand both the external environment and internal strengths, the next step is to bring them together into a coherent strategy that creates and sustains competitive advantage. This module focuses on strategic fit—aligning what the firm can do with what the market demands. You will learn to use SWOT analysis to generate and evaluate strategic options, apply the Strategy Diamond framework to design an integrated competitive strategy, and explore how firms sustain advantage through continuous innovation and dynamic renewal. After completing the module, you will be able to synthesize insights from internal and external analyses to formulate coherent competitive strategies that achieve strategic fit and promote sustainable competitive advantage in dynamic environments.
