What are the ethical considerations regarding the privacy and control of consumer information and big data, especially in the aftermath of recent large-scale data breaches? This course provides a framework to analyze these concerns as you examine the ethical and privacy implications of collecting and managing big data. Explore the broader impact of the data science field on modern society and the principles of fairness, accountability and transparency as you gain a deeper understanding of the importance of a shared set of ethical values. You will examine the need for voluntary disclosure when leveraging metadata to inform basic algorithms and/or complex artificial intelligence systems while also learning best practices for responsible data management, understanding the significance of the Fair Information Practices Principles Act and the laws concerning the "right to be forgotten." This course will help you answer questions such as who owns data, how do we value privacy, how to receive informed consent and what it means to be fair. Data scientists and anyone beginning to use or expand their use of data will benefit from this course. No particular previous knowledge needed....

Companies will do what the public will tolerate, not what is ethical. This course ignores structural ethics and thus mislocates responsibility, evidenced by the question in the final quiz resulting in the conclusion companies Must trend more ethical due to public feedback. Trouble is the axiom/premise is flawed from the start - so it's a good course in the sense it recognizes that and sets a strict definition of what ethics means to explore the concepts, but fails to address structural problems. The public will lose the "war" of rights towards our data, despite winning the occasional battle, if structural ethics of users rights to their data are not discussed and codified.

This course asks true or false questions when the answer can be either yes or no, or true or false, depending upon circumstances, and where the circumstances aren't specified in the questions - which present only absolute/binary answer options with no opportunity to clarify or expound. It also uses words in quiz questions that have dinctincltly different meanings when used as nouns or verbs and where either could apply to the question, with only one answer considered correct. It also uses cases where there are laws in different states and then asks if something is eithical or legal to do to do (yes or no). Some of the questions aren't fact based at all and are matters of opinion when course materials left gray area. I stopped taking the class out of frustration with issues such as these after spending over 20 hours. This experience was very disappointing and my conclusoin became one that obtaining the certificate would be of no substance if I continued. Very disapointed.
