A STEM degree is in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. India’s broad population of learners sees the value in STEM subjects. In 2023 alone, 34 percent of the country’s learners chose this dynamic field, making it the country with the largest population of STEM degree learners [1]. By earning a degree in one of these disciplines, you could enter the workforce prepared for various in-demand careers.

Take a closer look at what types of STEM degrees are available and the associated job prospects.

4 types of STEM degrees

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and degrees in STEM can be broken down into these four broad categories. Take a closer look at some popular options in each.

Science degrees

Science is the study of the material, physical, and natural world. Many jobs in the sciences require at least a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Some examples of science bachelor’s degree subjects include:

  • Nursing

  • Biology

  • Chemistry

  • Physics

  • Zoology

  • Microbiology

Some exciting jobs requiring at least a bachelor’s degree in a science-related discipline include:

  • Physicist

  • Geologist

  • Chemist

  • Research scientist

  • Veterinarian

  • Pharmacist

Technology degrees

When you apply science and maths to human activity, you get technology, a field with high demand for skilled workers. Although only some tech jobs require a degree, many employers seek candidates with at least a bachelor’s degree. As humans rely more and more on technology, job opportunities should continue to expand.

Examples of technology bachelor’s degrees include:

  • Computer science

  • Information technology

  • Information systems

  • Cybersecurity

An advantage of technology careers is that some offer the ability to work remotely. If you’re looking for a career that you can do from home, a STEM degree in technology could open up new opportunities. Some examples of exciting STEM jobs that require a degree in a technology subject include:

  • Software engineer

  • Web developer

  • Full stack developer

  • IT security manager

  • Applications architect

  • Blockchain engineer

  • Mobile applications developer

  • Machine learning engineer

Engineering degrees

If technology results from applying science and maths to human activity, engineering comprises the methods that get you there. It involves designing, building, and operating machines, engines, and other structures. Some examples of engineering bachelor’s degrees include:

  • Mechanical engineering

  • Electrical engineering

  • Civil engineering

  • Chemical engineering

  • Computer engineering

  • Aerospace engineering

Generally, you’ll need at least an engineering or advanced degree to compete in the field. Examples of engineering jobs include:

  • Environmental engineer

  • Biomedical engineer

  • Mechanical engineer

  • Petroleum engineer

  • Electrical engineer

  • Civil engineer

  • Environmental engineer

  • Chemical engineer

  • Technical writer

  • Industrial engineer

Mathematics degrees

If you love mathematics, the science of numbers, quantity, and space, a STEM degree can lead you to a rewarding career. Mathematics offers career opportunities in academia and industry in fields ranging from technology to finance. Some examples of maths degree options include:

  • Mathematics

  • Statistics

  • Accounting and finance

  • Economics

Maths skills translate across numerous jobs and industries. Earning a maths-related degree could potentially build a career in any field that interests you. Some examples of maths-based careers include:
