Prompt engineering is vital in today’s generative artificial intelligence (AI) field. Prompt engineers are the primary users of generative AI who significantly enhance the effectiveness of AI interactions and overall model performance.

Understanding prompt engineering

Prompt engineering involves using the correct language to prompt a generative AI interface to provide the most accurate, human-like output possible. This may require you to give the AI extensive instructions, or you may obtain the desired answer by varying formats, diction, phrasing, and symbols.

Impact of prompt engineering

Expertly structured prompts significantly influence AI outputs’ quality and relevance. They help you make AI models as efficient and effective as possible, ensuring you can obtain an appropriate answer with the fewest possible queries. 

The way you phrase questions also significantly impacts AI responses. In designing and refining input prompts, prompt engineers may use the following concepts to maximize the utility of AI models: constraints, examples, open-ended questions, prompt chaining, role-playing, and specificity.

Entry-level position in prompt engineering

Junior prompt engineers are entry-level positions where you assist your superiors with developing, fine-tuning, and monitoring an AI model’s performance. 

Junior prompt engineers

Average annual base salary: $111,820 [1]

Requirements: Junior prompt engineers usually have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or statistics. 

Junior prompt engineers work to prompt generative AI to achieve the best output possible. This is part of an AI’s training: When a generative AI model can’t produce the appropriate output, no matter how clear or clever the prompt, programmers may need to retrain it with different input data. 

Becoming a prompt engineer requires acquiring various skills and a solid foundation in the subfields of AI. The following skills are generally valuable even for an entry-level position in prompt engineering.

  • Creativity 

  • AI concepts: LLMs, ML, deep learning, and NLP

  • Communication and collaboration

  • Knowledge of algorithms and data structures

  • Programming language proficiency (especially with Python) 

Mid-level positions in prompt engineering

With experience and increased skills, you can advance from a junior to mid-level prompt engineer or use your experience in other roles, such as that of an AI application developer. 

Mid-level prompt engineer

Average annual base salary: $122,914 [1]

Requirements: Like their junior counterparts, mid-level prompt engineers generally need a bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or statistics. 

Mid-level prompt engineers work with various natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Typical responsibilities you may encounter include: 

  • Answering more sophisticated queries

  • Developing new applications

  • Improving machine translation capabilities

As a mid-level prompt engineer, you will likely need proficiency in Python, thoroughly know data structures and algorithms, and understand LLMs well. You’ll also benefit from having excellent communication skills, as you will likely need to explain high-concept technical programming and its relative business value to non-expert stakeholders. 

AI application developer

Average annual base salary: $112,071 [2]

Requirements: AI application developers typically have a bachelor's degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics, engineering, or a related field. 

AI application developers create software that they build into various applications. In this role, you’ll perform similar duties to a software developer, albeit with an AI focus. You’ll use your programming expertise to help power AI of all types, including those that require prompting. 

To build the best possible AI models, AI application developers tend to be well-versed in user experience (UX) principles. The purpose of UX is to develop AI models that are approachable and intuitive for non-specialist users.

To improve interface designs, you will use techniques such as: 

  • A/B testing: Testing two different AI models with users to see which model responds best to prompts. 

  • Continuous monitoring: Ensuring that an AI model continues to perform its stated business function as data changes. 

  • Human evaluation: You may need to manually ensure that your AI model’s output is not only accurate, efficient, and relevant but also sounds like it came from a human being.

As an AI application developer, you'll work to make AI more user-friendly and easier to understand. Explainability remains one of the biggest challenges in the field—a "black box" problem even for experienced developers. Often, not even seasoned programmers can fully understand or explain why an AI model makes a particular decision.

Advanced roles in prompt engineering

As you move up the prompt engineering career ladder to roles like a senior prompt engineer or head of AI interaction strategy, your salary will likely increase—as will the job requirements and responsibilities. 

Senior prompt engineer

Average annual base salary: $138,378 [1]

Requirements: Senior prompt engineers usually have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or statistics. They also benefit from a solid background in AI, data science, linguistics, and NLP, as well as leadership and communication skills.

Senior prompt engineers are leaders in their field and have expertise in many relevant tasks. For instance, they must understand how to choose the right AI models for specific business cases: Large models perform more complex functions than smaller ones. In contrast, smaller models are generally more efficient. 

Furthermore, different models work best for various tasks. ChatGPT, for instance, works very well regarding text or code generation, whereas other models may be a better fit depending on the use case.

As a senior prompt engineer, you must also ensure you train your generative AI models for domain specificity. After all, a senior prompt engineer working for a legal firm will likely find it challenging to obtain sophisticated material from an AI interface that is not trained on high-level legal content. You will also likely document a team’s prompting strategies and need a solid understanding of which prompts work in specific cases. You can then standardize these strategies and share them with stakeholders. 

Head of AI interaction strategy

Average annual base salary: $140,077 [3]

Requirements: Many heads of AI interaction strategy have backgrounds as data scientists or other AI professionals. They may also possess project management and business administration experience. They typically hold a bachelor’s degree in data science or information technology and a master’s degree in business administration.

Heads of AI interaction strategy are big-picture, long-term thinkers who collaborate with top-level executives to develop optimal ways for a company to engage with AI. In this job, you’ll oversee a company’s development, implementation, and ongoing use of AI platforms across all departments. As a head of AI interaction strategy, you may also take responsibility for the following: 

  • Enabling AI for productivity initiatives

  • Identifying new AI use cases

  • Improving overall AI quality

  • Optimizing AI efficiency

  • Vetting new AI technologies

You must also ensure that a business’s AI model and usage guidelines are not overly costly, risk-intensive, or detrimental to overall performance. As the head of AI interaction strategy, you will need exceptional collaborative and communication skills. You will regularly interact with a variety of employees and stakeholders, including: 

  • Board members

  • Chief data officers

  • Chief information officers

  • Chief technology officers

  • Information technology (IT) professionals

  • Senior executives

Beginning a prompt engineering career

To start your career in prompt engineering, you might consider one of many available paths, such as formal education, practical experience, or certificate programs.

  • Explore educational pathways: A bachelor’s degree can open doors to various prompt engineering careers. Explore relevant majors such as artificial intelligence, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and statistics.

  • Gain practical experience: In addition to what you gain through formal education, pursue opportunities for practical experience. Collaborate with other professionals, like AI developers and data scientists, to develop skills and knowledge based on practical experience. This can allow you to see exactly what goes into AI model construction, which can, in turn, help you better understand how to prompt an AI model. 

  • Consider entry-level certifications: Some certifications may help you land a prompt engineering career when you start. Explore certifications or certificate programs in AI platforms or tools, AI strategy, data visualization, or prompt design.

Strategies for career advancement in prompt engineering

After working in prompt engineering for a time, you may be ready to advance in the field—networking, earning advanced credentials, and continued learning may help with upward mobility.

  • Network with the AI community: Bring questions or comments to the AI community to learn more about how others approach prompt engineering. OpenAI, among many others, hosts a free forum and message board. 

  • Pursue additional credentials: You may want to take courses or pursue additional credentials to enhance your prompt engineering resume. Learning new skills may also be beneficial; for instance, gaining a deeper understanding of AI interfaces can help you become familiar with the finer points of chat-responsive AI. 

  • Embrace continual learning: The AI and prompt engineering world continues to evolve. Embrace continuous education to ensure your skill set remains relevant. Acquire skills you haven’t yet mastered or further develop your knowledge about the latest AI trends.
